Sticky Posts in Sections

Hi, our website is http://lindsayadvocate.ca/. We have several post categories. The main stream has been set up to show all posts excluding Briefs (which shows on the right panel of the home page).

We would like Section 1 to show one Big Post which is the very latest post but no a Brief. We tried making the newest posts (except briefs) sticky and set Section 1's 'Display posts from?' field to 'Sticky Posts'. However, Section 1 is ignoring the instruction to show only sticky posts and showing all posts, including briefs, which we never set to sticky.

Can you tell us what's causing this? Is there a theme upgrade to correct this issue?

    Hi Kim,

    Apologies for the late reply.

Sounds like a bug but could you make sure you are on Fox 2.7.1. That's the latest version of the theme.

And if this checks out then respond with temporary admin access - username password with admin privileges we check this out from the backend.

Also could you clarify what the Briefs or do you mean the excerpt for posts i.e. the summary of the post's main content.

    Thanks.

    Hi John,

Thanks for getting in touch. I can confirm we are using Fox Version: 2.7.1. We also installed the child theme which came in the Fox download folder. However, the child theme files have not been updated, its exactly as downloaded for now.

The Briefs I'm referring to are posts assigned to a category called 'Briefs'. They are posts we don't want to show on the left side of the side, only to a designated area on the right side on a widget we've setup especially for Briefs.

We would like the Main Stream section to show, exactly as it is now and the latest post (excluding Briefs) to show in section 1. Section 1 is setup to show 'Sticky Posts' and we've been setting all new posts (except Briefs) as sticky. Section 1 should show the most recent post as a 'Big Post'. It's not doing that, its ignoring what was set as sticky and showing the most recent post overall which includes Briefs.

We've temporarily hidden section 1 using the Custom CSS & JS plugin because it keeps showing Briefs.

Give me a moment please to check with the site owner that I can provide you with admin access. I'll write back soon.

    Hi John,

The  site owner approves. Below are the login details.

    Login Page: http://lindsayadvocate.ca/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Flindsayadvocate.ca%2Fwp-admin%2F&

    Username: johnthedeveloper

    Password: P@$$w0rd

As I mentioned in my last message, we've hidden Section 1 until the issue is fixed using css. It can be shown by removing/commenting out lines 2/3 in the Simple CSS and JS plugin: http://lindsayadvocate.ca/wp-admin/post.php?post=479&action=edit

    Hi Kim,

    Apologies for the late reply.

We logged in and set section 1 to show sticky posts and this posts is the one showing on the homepage at the top: http://lindsayadvocate.ca/mpp-scott-shows-support-food-security-basic-income/

Seems that it's working straight out of the box.
The thing we noticed is the preview on the customizer are is not loading and its seems to be an error with SAMEORIGIN x-frame settings on your server. You can see if your hosting provider can help with that.

    Cheers.

  • Kim replied

Thanks John. It seems to be functioning as it should. Not sure what happened.

Hi John, we've made no absolutely no changes to the setup. However, there was a new post added today called "Basic income support from Lindsay employment agency, VCCS". This post was not made sticky but its showing twice. First, in Section 1 which should only be for sticky posts and the second place in the main stream. See attached.

I will now update the home builder so that the Main Stream has on offset of 1. That's the only change I'll be making. We really need to have this fixed asap. Non-sticky posts should not be appearing in Section 1.

    Hi Kim,

We are not able to replicate this issue on our demo site.
Could you update wordpress and see if the preview of the site shows up on the appearance \ customize area as this might be linked.

For now you can backdate http://lindsayadvocate.ca/basic-income-support-lindsay-employment-agency-vccs/ so that its publish date is before http://lindsayadvocate.ca/mpp-scott-shows-support-food-security-basic-income/. That might show  SAMEORIGIN x-frame settings on your server.the post you want instead of the other if you use the poverty reduction post category instead of the sticky posts option. This is a temporary workaround while you see if the update fixes things up.

Also check with your hosting provider about the SAMEORIGIN x-frame settings on your server.
Hope this exposes the cause of the issue.

    Hi John,

We've just upgraded to wordpress v4.8.2. I'm seeing a preview of the site in the Customize area just fine, even before the upgrade but perhaps we should explore that in case its the root cause. I'll get in contact with the host on the 'SAMEORIGIN x-frame' issue. Where can I see this error myself?

    Hi Kim,

You can see if from the browser console in the devtools when viewing the customize page.
    You hosting provider will understand.

    Cheers.

    Hi John,

I contacted the host and they're not seeing the error in the console log. The host and I are both using Firefox to access the site; no xframe error and the site displays in the Customize section.

When I checked the site on Google Chrome, the error shows there. That must be a browser issue.

    Hi Kim,

We logged in again using Microsoft Edge browser, we changed section on to pick from sticky post. And then we set the original post you wanted as sticky - http://lindsayadvocate.ca/mpp-scott-shows-support-food-security-basic-income/ and now it shows as the first big post on the homepage.

Think you should use Microsoft Edge or any other browser for editing because the preview also shows.
    Cheers.

    John,

The issue is that the new posts which we don't set as sticky show in the sticky section. We can't keep manipulating the post dates every time there's a new post. We're fine with the most recent post showing in Section 1 as long as that post isn't one categorized under 'Briefs'.

I'll find a work around for this issue.

Do you have a demo site where I can replicate the issue? If not I can copy lindsayadvocate.ca to a test area.

    Hi Kim,

The editing works on other browsers e.g. Edge.
You can try editing the setting from that browser or is this not an option?

You will have to do the copy on a subdomain on your site. We do not have a demo site for replication.
The issue is particular to your site by the way.

    Regards.

    Hi John,

We've been Firefox and there's never been an issue changing the settings or previewing the site in Customize. I will replicate the site. I think that will better demonstrate the issue since we can't leave it in disarray. I will update you soon on that. Thanks.
